Hating your duty…. and doing it!

My mom hated cooking for a large joint family with tons of guests, many of whom were long term residents. Every meal had to be prepared fresh and every generation had a different set of diet restrictions, requirements and timing. If I had heard her say ‘vedhava vanta’ (damn cooking) once, I have  heard her say it a thousand times… in private.

Everyone else was all in praise of her cooking and service mindedness!

She made sure that I was highly educated and supported me in a high flying career. I hated it because, I wanted to be with my kid and raise him, but it did not work out. I received praise in my career because of my hard work and dedication, but was perpetually moaning that my I was not there for my kid. Split responsibilities. Double duties!. But I did it as long as I had the health and the opportunity.

This illustrates my son’s enthusiasm for his student duties. But he studies nevertheless.

My dad’s responsibilities in addition to providing and protecting were repair, maintenance and putting  things in their place. How he hated it that we (grandparents as well as us) saved up all our repairs, electrical, plumbing, telephone, construction everything for him to take care of even when he was out of country! But he did them nevertheless, swinging into duty as soon as he landed.

I gues we all hate our duties, but do them nevertheless.
