In the days when humanity was young, tribes hung out together. They lived together, they fought together, ate together, mated amongst themselves and identified with themselves. They dressed the same way, knew the same stories and songs and they all looked like each other.

Globalization, has resulted in a global village, where our neighbours, families across the street, look different, dress different, speak different languages, have different values and beliefs, eat different food and exhibit different kinds of behaviour.

This is great fun for the novelty seekers and stay at home travellers like myself.
But it is very frightening for many, many people. Therefore nearly every city in the world has segregation. People of the same skin colour, educational background, financial status, reigious beliefs, languages, genders etc gravitate towards specific areas and live there. While the past governments approved of such segregation, modern thinking believes it to be bad and often demeaning or disadvantageous for some of the tribes.
Economy. Technology and Politics, three driving factors of globalization have started tearing away at segregation. And throwing us all together – like a salad.
Our bodies have been physically thrown together, but our minds are back in our roots, our families, our villages, our communities – our “Mental Tribes”.
Today I read that their are “curry” racist attacks on Indians in Australia.
I read that the Deras and the Sikhs, both Punjabis are fighting both in Vienna and Jalandhar.
People feel a lot more for their mental tribes whom they have never met, than their own neighbours who they have lived with for several years. This is an unfortunate fall out of globalization. Should everyone return to their roots in Africa? Is it possible?
Should all Indians in Australia come back to India, and All Australian Whites go back to Europe? Is it possible?
Or should we make friends with our neighbours? After all we like dogs and cats and cows which are genetically different from us. Can we be more accepting and tolerant of our neighbours with whom we share the air we breathe, the sunlight, the roads and the water? Can we re-define our internal image of a tribe to include humanity?
