More Indians to Love!!!

How many of us are there? (2001 Census) :  1028.7 millions up 21% up from 846 million in 1991. I think the next census is due shortly 2011. So the projection may be 1200 million…?

How many are girls? 93% of us are women. So we have more choice…. The ladies of Daman and Diu district are simply spoilt with almost 2 guys for every girl. (591:1000)

How many of us are Dalits? 1 person in every 6 Indians belongs to a Scheduled Caste (Dalit). 1 person in every 12 Indians belongs to a Scheduled Tribe (Dalit). So every fifth Indian belongs to SC/ST. In Punjab, every fourth person belongs to SC. In Koch district of Bihar, every other person belongs to a SC.

9 out of every 10 belong to ST in Mizoram, same as Lakshadweep. But less than 1 in 10 belong to ST in Andaman. (I wonder how that happens)!

How many of us live in the villages? 72 % of Indians live in the villages. That is 742,490,639 at last count.

How many of us are Hindus? 827,578,868 (80.5%)  Indian Muslims : 13.4 %, Christians : 2.3 %, Sikhs : 1.9 %, Buddhists 0.8%, Jains 0.4%,  Others; 0.6%, Not Stated: 0.1%

As per the 2001 census, 16 % of Indians are dalits and about 4% Indians belong to Christians, Buddhists and others. So a Majority of the Dalits must be Hindus.

How many of us can sign our name? Almost all Keralites, about 60-70% of the men and about 50% of the women.

Workforce: About  half of the men and one fourth of the women are “workers”. Whatever that means.

One in every hundred Indians has no home and 4 in every hundred live in an institution of some kind.

The population has almost trebled from my birth to now. While the rural poulation has doubled during this period, the urban population is now 4 times as much as it used to be. (It will be interesting to take a look at the Bangalore population…)

A little more than 50% of the population are between 15 yrs and 60 years and therefore capable of working. This possibly explains the “workers”.

Delhi appears to be the Most  Over-Crowded place  with 9000 Indians per sq km and with 30,000  Indians per sq km in 1 district.

There are 600,000 inhabitated villages and 45000 uninhabited villages in India. (What is an uninhabited village? And why is it uninhabited?)
