You recognise these words from Gandhiji’s Raghupati Raghava Raja Ram, Patita Pavana Sita ram.
It means (as you know) that Ishwar and Allah are both Your names, please give everyone good sense.
I love this Bhajan. But only yesterday, I understood something else about it. The words were of the last century, but the sentiment is as old as the Vedas.
Tvam Eva Agni, Tavameva raja, tvameva Varuna, tavemeva Aryaman, tvameva Indra and so on.
The Vedas tell us that Agni, Indra and all the rest are all the same “Tat”‘ see http://satyaveda.wordpress.com/2009/02/17/the-vedas-are-monotheistic/
Gandhiji was putting the wisdom of the Vedas into simple Hindi and adding one more name of God to the lexicon, to reduce the meaningless wounds that India was inflicting on herself.
The Vedic System is one of acceptance, not one of assimilation as people are fond of writing. Since God is One and God is tolerant, I am perfectly confident that every devoted tribal, Sikh, Hindu, Muslim, Christian, Jew and whatever other, will receive the same divine grace from God. What matters is the love and the devotion.
As for the rest…. Sabko Sanmati De Bhagwan!

I love this. Very well said. You have the vision of the India I want to see too. Let us never stop working for it with a good spirit moving our hearts. You made my day, just to think of the benefit to humanity every time this consciousness is activated. I am a secular Sufi Yogini. I like all the religions. As long as they do good to humanity, not harm. I first heard these lines of Gandhiji sung by Sheila Chandra, in the song “Bhajan.” I searched the lyrics to find more people who think this way.
So sweet. I wrote this nearly 2 years ago.. and today.. someone liked it! So you made my day too!
